Coenzyme A oxidized, Free acid
CAS No.: 31664-36-5
Synonym(s): Coenzyme A oxidized, CoA–S-S–CoA, CoA disulfideAvailability: 2-3 weeks
Oxidized Coenzyme A (CoA disulfide or (CoAS)₂) is a stable form of coenzyme A consisting of two CoA molecules linked by a disulfide bridge.¹ ² ³ Unlike reduced CoA, which is highly sensitive to air oxidation, CoA disulfide is chemically stable and serves as a convenient storage form that can be readily reduced back to active CoA.¹ ³ In biology, oxidized CoA is involved in protein CoAlation (S-thiolation by CoA), a reversible redox modification where CoA forms mixed disulfides with protein cysteines under oxidative or metabolic stress, protecting them from irreversible overoxidation and regulating enzyme activity.² ³
Applications
Oxidized Coenzyme A is used in research and biotechnology as a stable, accessible form of CoA for biochemical and redox studies.¹ It supports investigations of protein CoAlation mechanisms across prokaryotic and mammalian systems, including studies of stress responses and reversible enzyme regulation.² ³ In analytical and production contexts, CoA disulfide is purified using sustainable membrane-based cross-flow diafiltration systems that separate it from ATP and ADP.¹
