Butyryl Coenzyme A (Butyryl-CoA) is a short-chain fatty acyl-CoA and a central intermediate in the microbial synthesis of butyrate, the primary energy source for human colonocytes.¹ ² ³ ⁴ It is formed through multiple bacterial pathways, most notably the acetyl-CoA pathway, which converge at the reduction of crotonyl-CoA to butyryl-CoA via the Bcd–Etf complex, a reaction that conserves energy.¹ ³ In human cells, it also functions as an acyl donor for protein butyrylation, modifying lysine residues on histones H3 and H4 to regulate chromatin structure and gene transcription.²

Applications

 

Butanoyl Coenzyme A, Sodium Salt, is widely used in biochemical research to study lipid metabolism and enzymatic processes involving acyl-CoA derivatives.
